The request for Lost Medals Australia assistance came from Bob D who lives in Portsmouth, Virginia, USA. Flood's BWM had come in to Bob's Grand Father's possession when he won it in a Poker game. The family kept the medal until Bob contacted us. The search turned out to be very involved and Bill had to recruit authors, web site owners and an assortment of other contacts to eventually locate a nephew of Flood's wife Rose, Richard. As it turns out Richard lives in France. So a BWM issued to an Australian Doctor ends up in the USA and is returned to a family member in France.

Well don the lost medals team :)
ReplyDeleteGlyn,
ReplyDeleteIt was a pleasure to be able to return the medal after all those years. I only wish my Granddad was still living so I could find out where/when he met Major Flood.
Thanks to you and everyone that contributed to this effort!
It was our pleasure Bob. Finding you post about this medal and the link to the review on the SMS Wolf really deserved an update.

Bob, if your Grandfather was in Papua New Guinea when Lt Colonel (Dr) John Wellesley Flood was there, that might be where he won the medal. Unless it was previously won by someone else.
ReplyDeleteIn 1919, John finally returned home to Sth Australia, and later in 1919 went to Rabaul Papua New Guinea until he died in 1929.
From what's available to read on the www, it says he made a trip back to Australia in about 1926.
The family tree, with some biographical details is on WIKITREE and their resting places have been connected up on Find a Grave. (might take a few weeks for the changes to appear).
